2.2.6 Risk and Safety Committee

(Bylaws)

  1. The Risk and Safety Management Committee is responsible to the Vice President for Financial Administration.

  2. The committee consists of the following members: Associate Vice President for Financial Administration; Risk and Safety Officer; Vice President for Student Life; Director of Campus Security; Director of Facility Services; Director of Human Resources; Associate Vice President for Academic Administration; three faculty, elected by the faculty in single-candidate elections; and four staff, elected by the Staff Council. Elected members should be nominated to represent a broad range of employee groups across campus.

  3. The term of membership for elected members is one year with no limit on the number of consecutive terms served.

  4. The chair is elected by the committee from among its membership. The chair's term is one year with no limit on the number of consecutive terms served.

  5. The committee's goal is to provide a safe and healthy environment for employees, students, and others, and to assist in minimizing risks for the institution. The committee will
    a. Review reports and campus education programs, as well as the minutes of the Risk and Safety Management sub-committees, and recommend priorities.

    b. Evaluate any accident investigations to determine if the cause(s) of the unsafe situation were identified and corrected.

  6. The committee meets at least once a quarter.

(Procedures)

  1. Protocol
    1. The Risk and Safety Officer develops the agenda, in consultation with the chair, and distributes it at least three days in advance of meetings.

    2. Actions are taken by vote or consensus.

    3. The committee reviews and evaluates

      i. The annual report from each Risk and Safety Management entity

      ii. The annual Adventist Risk Management Site Survey for each campus

      iii. The work of the Risk and Safety Management sub-committee

      iv.  Any accident investigations reports produced since the last meeting of the committee.

      iv. Safety recommendations from employees, students and others’ safety recommendations

      v.  Workplace accident and illness prevention programs

  2. Communication
    1. The Risk and Safety Officer distributes the minutes.

    2. The committee makes recommendations to departments and the President.

  3. Documentation
    1. Rationale for each action and recommendation is included in the minutes.

    2. Minutes of each meeting are kept indefinitely on file in the Human Resource office.

    3. Meetings are recorded, and the recording is kept on file in the Human Resources office for a minimum of one year..
