SOCI 236 Privilege and Oppression
Study of the construction of contemporary American social categories including mechanisms of privilege and oppression. Examination of the distribution of social resources to groups and individuals, as well as theoretical explanations of how unequal patterns of distribution are produced, maintained, and challenged. Emphasizes how race, culture, ethnicity, gender, sexuality, age, ability, and religion intersect with social class to produce different life experiences. Course will stress the importance of advocating for social justice and equality.
