Baccalaureate Degrees
The Bachelor of Arts degree consists of four years of course work that places the student's major field of study in the context of a liberal arts education. To encourage a wide range of studies, the degree requires a greater concentration of general studies courses than do other degrees and a minor in an area distinct from the major, while it allows a greater number of electives. In the tradition of the liberal arts, all Bachelor of Arts degree majors require foreign language study.
The Bachelor of Business Administration degree consists of a four-year program with concentrations available in accounting, entrepreneurship and small business management, finance, management, and marketing. For specific requirements, see the School of Business section of this bulletin.
The Bachelor of Education degree consists of a four-year program in which students earn a secondary teaching certification. The degree must be combined with a major in an approved secondary content area, leading to endorsement in that major area. The Bachelor of Liberal Studies degree is an interdisciplinary four-year program that allows students to integrate concepts from across the disciplines while cultivating a broad array of skills. An area of emphasis must be selected. The BLS is open only to students who have already completed a minimum of 96 credit hours. The Bachelor of Music degree consists of four years of course work primarily in the major field of study. The degree is offered with a choice of two majors, Music Production or Music with concentrations available in performance and preparation for secondary teaching certification through the B.Ed. or M.I.T.
The Bachelor of Science degree consists of four years of course work that places the student's major field of study in the context of a liberal arts education. The degree permits somewhat greater concentration in the field of study. It requires fewer general studies courses than does the Bachelor of Arts degree because no foreign language study is required, and no minor is required with the exception of Elementary Education.
The Bachelor of Science in Engineering degree is a four-year program accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET, http://www.abet.org, requiring 200 quarter hours of course work. It is designed to prepare students for entry into the profession of engineering and for lifelong learning including programs of advanced study in bioengineering, civil, computer, electrical, and mechanical engineering or associated fields. The Bachelor of Social Work degree is a four-year program approved by the Council on Social Work Education, the accrediting body for all social work education programs.
